IEC 62631-3-1 Dielectric and Resistivity Properties of Solid Insulation Materials - Determination of Resistor Properties (DC methods) - Volume Resistance - General Method

IEC 62631-3-1 covers a test method for determining the volume resistance and volume resistance of electrical insulating materials by applying a DC voltage.

This edition contains the following important technical changes compared to the second edition of IEC 60093:

• IEC 60093 has been completely revised, both editorially and technically, and is included in the new IEC 62631 series;
• Test methods have been updated according to the current state of the art;
• Volume and surface resistivity and resistivity are now split to appear in this part of IEC 62631 and IEC 62631-3-2, respectively.

Measurement of volume resistance should be done carefully and taking into account the electrical properties of the measuring circuit and the specific electrical properties of the material. A high voltage is required in most cases to perform the test. Care must be taken to avoid electric shock.

Polarization effects can affect the measurement. it is therefore unacceptable to obtain twice the resistive resistance measured in two consecutive experiments without sufficient time interval in between.

A very stable direct voltage source is required. This can be provided by batteries or a rectified and stabilized power supply. The degree of stability required is that the change in current resulting from any change in voltage is negligible compared to the current to be measured.
