IEC/EN 60670-1 Enclosures and Enclosures for Electrical Accessories for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 1: General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC/EN 60670-1 standard. The IEC/EN 60670-1 standard, prepared and published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), refers to boxes, enclosures and parts of enclosures (hereinafter "boxes" and "enclosures") for electrical accessories with a rated voltage not exceeding 1 000 V ac and 1 500 V dc. will be referred to as ").

IEC/EN 60670-1 Enclosures and Enclosures for Electrical Accessories for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 1: General Requirements

Boxes and enclosures conforming to this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures normally not exceeding +40 °C, but the lower limit of ambient air temperature is − 5°C. During installation, the temperature may be outside the above temperature range according to the classification of boxes and enclosures.

This International Standard is intended to apply to boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories within the scope of IEC technical committee 23. This standard can be used as a reference document for other IEC technical committees and subcommittees. A box or enclosure that is an integral part of an electrical accessory and provides protection against external influences (eg mechanical impact, ingress of solid objects or water, etc.) is within the scope of the relevant standard for such an accessory.

This standard does not apply to:

  • ceiling roses;
  • Armature supporting couplers;
  • Boxes, enclosures and parts of enclosures specially designed for use in cable trays and trunking systems conforming to IEC 61084 and not intended to be mounted outside of such systems.

The tests performed according to this standard are type tests. Unless otherwise stated, boxes and enclosures are tested as delivered. Accessories conforming to other standards are not retested. Tests on boxes and enclosures of insulating material should be performed after at least 45 days of preconditioning at ambient temperature and relative air humidity between 85% and 10%.

Unless otherwise stated, tests are performed on a set of three samples, in the order of the items, at an ambient temperature of +15°C to +35°C. In case of doubt, tests are performed on three new sample sets at an ambient temperature of +(20 ± 5) °C. Samples are subjected to all relevant tests and if all tests are met, the requirements are met.

If one of the samples does not meet a test due to an assembly or manufacturing defect, that test and previous ones that may have affected the results of the test should be repeated and further tests should be performed in the appropriate order.

When submitting the first set of samples, the applicant may also submit an additional set of samples that may be required in the event of a sample failure. The test station will then test the additional set of samples without any request and reject it only if another failure occurs. Failure of a sample will result in rejection if the additional sample set is not submitted at the same time.
