EN 50289-1-3 Communication Cables - Specifications for Test Methods - Part 1-3: Electrical Test Methods - Standard Test Method for Dielectric Strength

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50289-1-3 testing. This Section 50289-1 of EN 3 details test methods for verifying the dielectric strength of insulation of finished cables used in analog and digital communication systems. It should be read in conjunction with EN 50289 section 1-1, which contains the essential provisions for its application.

EN 50289-1-3 Communication Cables - Specifications for Test Methods - Part 1-3: Electrical Test Methods - Standard Test Method for Dielectric Strength

The test equipment shall be capable of measuring voltages and providing the energy required to test a full delivery length. A sufficiently high protective resistor must be connected to the circuit that supplies the required test voltage to the wire under test.

The test should be performed on the cutout after the continuity or conductor resistance test. The voltage shall be applied at a rate not exceeding 1 kV/s up to the specified voltage. When the voltage specified in the relevant cable standard is maintained for the time specified, the cable will be considered to pass.

Measurements will be taken using a mixed-mode test setup, often referred to as an unbalanced, modal decomposition, or balunless setup. This allows measurements of balanced devices without using an RF balun in the signal path. With such a test setup, all balanced and unbalanced parameters can be measured over the full frequency range.

The test procedures described here require the use of a vector network analyzer or similar test equipment. The analyzer will be capable of full 4-port calibration and will be capable of isolation calibrations. The analyzer should at least cover the entire frequency range of the cable or wiring harness under test.
