This part of IEC EN 60227 details the specific specification for lightweight polyvinyl chloride sheathed cables with a rated voltage of 300/500 V. Each cable shall comply with the appropriate requirements given in IEC EN 60227-1 and the specific requirements of this chapter.
The insulation will be PVC/D type polyvinyl chloride, will consist of two layers and will be applied by double extrusion around the conductor. The outer insulation layer will be a contrasting color with the inner layer, but will adhere to the inner layer.
Perform the test on a 5 m long cable sample with all coatings removed. The cores of flat unsheathed cords should not be separated. For cables up to five cores, each core should be tested. For multicore cables with more than five cores, one core of each color in the cable will be tested, and where the number of colors is less than 5, bicolor cores will be tested as necessary to increase the number of cores tested to one.
Immerse the sample in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride with a concentration of 10 g/l and a temperature of (60 ± 5)°C, approximately 250 mm long with each end of the sample protruding above the solution. Connect the negative pole of 220 V DC. Feed the sample's conductors and the positive pole to a copper electrode immersed in the solution for a period of 240 hours.
