IEC EN 60255-8 Electrical Relays - Part 8: Standard Test for Thermal Electrical Relays

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60255-8 testing. The IEC EN 60255-8 standard is one of a series of international standards for electrical energy measurement, protection and control equipment. This standard specifies the specifications and performance requirements for overcurrent protection relays.

IEC EN 60255-8 Electrical Relays - Part 8: Standard Test for Thermal Electrical Relays

The IEC EN 60255-8 standard contains detailed instructions on the design, testing, calibration and use of overcurrent protection relays. This standard provides a set of test procedures to determine the sensitivity, response time, switching characteristics, temperature influence, vibration resistance and other performance characteristics of relays.

This standard aims to facilitate the use of overcurrent protection relays to protect against overcurrent conditions in power systems. In addition, the purpose of this standard is to improve safety and reliability by ensuring that relays are properly designed, installed and operated.

The IEC EN 60255-8 standard is a standard accepted by the European Union (EU) and many other countries. This standard is frequently used by engineers, technicians and manufacturers working in the energy industry.

This standard covers the following two types of relays:

  • Thermal electric relays with a cumulative memory function of load-current conditions prior to the conditions causing the relay to be switched;
  • Thermal electric relays with partial memory function, ie only overload current conditions.

This standard also covers special requirements for thermal electrical relays used for motor protection. The purpose of this standard is to specify special requirements for thermal electrical relays.

For a thermal electric relay with a total memory function, it gives the characteristic curve representing the relationship between the specified operating time and the current, taking into account the thermal effect of a given steady-state load current before the overload occurs.
