IEC EN 60609-1 Hydraulic Turbines - Storage Pumps and Pump Turbines - Cavitation Cavity Assessment - Part 1: Assessment in Storage Pumps and Pump Turbines

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60609-1 testing. It provides a basis for the formulation of warranties applied to cavitation scour for reaction hydraulic turbines, storage pumps, and pump turbines. The contract includes output, specific hydraulic energy (E), speed, material, work, etc. It deals with the measurement and evaluation of the amount of cavitation pit in certain machine components for certain conditions defined by . Cavitation pit assessment is based on material loss over a period of time and under correctly defined operating conditions. All wet surfaces are taken into account.

Contract documents will specify whether cavitation pitting on the hydraulic machine is to be expected in all or some operating ranges. Whether or not cavitation pitting is foreseen, contractual guarantees are required that limit the scope of cavitation pitting.

This standard assumes that water is not chemically aggressive. Where the water is deemed to be chemically aggressive, a guarantee of cavitation-pitting will be given on the basis of the agreed water analysis. Since chemical aggressiveness is dependent on many possible chemical compositions and materials of the machine, it is beyond the scope of this standard to set specific limits.

If during subsequent analysis it becomes clear that the water is in fact more aggressive than indicated in the agreed analysis, this should be taken into account when assessing whether the cavitation pitting guarantees are met. If cavitation pitting occurs in areas where the damage can be separately attributed to chemical or electrochemical corrosion, such damage will be excluded from the cavitation pitting assessment. If cavitation pitting occurs in areas where it can be demonstrated that increased damage by chemical or electrochemical effects to those normal to cavitation in water in the agreed analysis, such areas will be excluded from the assessment of cavitation pitting.

Unless otherwise agreed, the cavitation-pitting warranty period or the cavitation-pitting warranty working period will be the same as the contractually agreed period for the hydraulic machine as a whole.
