EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61558-2-6 testing. IEC EN 61558-2-6 addresses the safety of safety isolation transformers for general applications and power supply units including safety isolation transformers for general applications. Transformers containing electronic circuits are also covered by this document.

IEC EN 61558-2-6 Special Requirements and Tests for Safety Isolation Transformers for General Applications and Power Supply Units Containing Safety Isolation Transformers

Unless otherwise stated, the term transformer includes power supply units including safety isolation transformers for general applications and safety isolation transformers for general applications. This chapter is applicable to stationary or portable, single-phase or multi-phase, air-cooled (natural or forced) stand-alone or related dry-type transformers. Coils may be encapsulated or unencapsulated.

This section does not apply to external circuits and their components intended to be connected to the input terminals and output terminals of transformers. The transformers covered in this section are used in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is required by installation rules or the end product standard.

The no-load output voltage is measured when the transformer is connected to the rated supply voltage at the rated supply frequency at ambient temperature. For stand-alone transformers, this output voltage limitation applies even when output windings not designed for interconnection are connected in series.

The difference between the no-load output voltage and the under-load output voltage should not be excessive. The input and output circuits shall be electrically separated from each other and the construction shall be such that there is no possibility of connection between these circuits directly or indirectly via other conductive parts.

For external wiring, the input and output terminals must be located so that the measured distance between the entry points of the conductors to these terminals is not less than 25 mm. If a barrier is used to achieve this distance, measurements should be made over and around the barrier, which will be made of insulating material and be permanently fixed to the transformer.

There shall be no connection between the output circuits and the housing unless permitted by the relevant equipment standard - for the respective transformers. For transformers connected to the mains via a plug of any type (whether included or not), the alternative to basic insulation and protective shielding is not permitted.
