IEC EN 61558-2-8 Special Requirements and Tests for Transformers and Power Supply Units for Bells and Chimes

This part of IEC EN 61558 deals with the safety of bell and bell transformers and power supply units including bell and bell transformers. Transformers containing electronic circuits are also covered by this standard.

This section applies to fixed, single-phase, air-cooled (natural or forced) stand-alone or related dry-type transformers. Coils may be encapsulated or unencapsulated. Used in conjunction with sections 2-16 for switched mode power supply (SMPS) units, this standard also applies to power supplies with internal operating frequencies higher than 500 Hz. Where two needs conflict, the most severe takes precedence.

The rated supply voltage does not exceed 250 V ac and the rated supply frequency does not exceed 500 Hz. This standard applies to transformers and linear power supplies with an internal operating frequency not exceeding 500 Hz.

Bell and bell transformers are generally designed to power domestic audio signaling equipment and other similar devices where the load is applied for short periods of time. This section does not apply to external circuits and their components intended to be connected to the input terminals and output terminals of transformers.

The transformers covered in this section are used only in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is required by installation rules or the end product standard. This section applies to transformers associated with certain equipment to the extent agreed by the relevant IEC technical committees.

The input and output circuits shall be electrically separated from each other and the construction shall be such that there is no possibility of connection between these circuits directly or indirectly via other conductive parts.
