IEC EN 61857-21 describes a general purpose model (GPM) and long channel alternative model (GPM-TC) that can be used for the evaluation of wire wound electrical insulation systems (EIS) for which certain electrotechnical products are not available.
General-purpose models are useful in evaluating the compatibility of electrical insulating materials (EIM) used in a candidate electrical insulation system (EIS). A GPM is not capable of simulating the impact of real production processes such as winding techniques. As a result, the impact of production processes will be minimal. A GPM can be hand-assembled using simple facilities.
Channels representing laminations in an electrotechnical product will be suitably formed from stainless steel sheets and fixed to the base. One or more EIMs or different thicknesses of EIM can be used as soil insulation in construction. Two insulators for each coil will be fixed to the base.
The coils will be wound with two parallel winding wires (bifilar winding). The wrap sets should fill the channels. Each coil can be wound with a different coil wire, and each coil wire will be in contact with ground insulation and coil to coil insulation. Coils should be connected to insulators to facilitate dielectric testing from coil to frame, coil to coil, and conductor to conductor.
