NEMA C37-57 Switchgear - Metal Enclosed Breaker Switchgears

This standard is a conformity test standard that can be optionally applied to all metal-enclosed breaker switchgears designed, tested and manufactured in accordance with ANSI/IEEE C37.20.3.

The ANSI/IEEE C37.20.3 requirement is sufficient for the application of metal-enclosed circuit breaker switchgear and conformity testing is not required to meet the essential requirements of this standard. Compliance testing is performed to demonstrate compliance with key requirements when it is necessary to meet specific agreements or regulatory requirements.

Compliance testing may be performed in conjunction with basic design testing, if agreed to by interested parties; however, suitability testing is more likely to be done some time after original development to meet a specific need.

Metal-enclosed breaker (MEI) switchgear may contain application-specific control and instrumentation components that are not considered separately within the scope of this standard.

This standard does not cover equipment intended to be used for the generation, control, conversion, transmission and distribution of electrical energy located at facilities under the exclusive control of electrical installations for communication or measurement purposes, or in buildings used exclusively by utilities.
