In particular, EN 50264-1 specifies requirements for fire safety. Based on years of proven experience and reliability, these cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses that cause aging equivalent to continuous operating life at a conductor temperature of 90°C.

Before these polymers were widely accepted in the cable industry, aging performance was evaluated by long-term thermal endurance testing and estimated to 60216 hours using techniques equivalent to those in EN 20000 (series). Subsequent service experience has shown that the predicted performance levels are correct. Where extrapolated data is used to estimate service life, it should be confirmed with the cable manufacturer and based on a failure mode appropriate to the material or cable type. The maximum conductor temperature for short circuit conditions is 5°C for 200 s. This Part 1 should be read in conjunction with the other parts of EN 50264.

The sealing system will be applied by extrusion and may consist of one or more tightly adhered layers. The insulation system should be applied in such a way that it fits tightly on the conductor or on the separator tape or on the conductor shielding to form a compact and homogeneous body, and it is possible to remove the insulation system without damaging the tinned conductor.
