IEC 60811-501 gives the procedure for determining mechanical properties applicable to crosslinked and thermoplastic compounds typically used for insulation and coating materials.

These tests are to determine the tensile strength and elongation at break after one or more accelerated aging processes specified in the relevant cable standard when the insulating material of the cable is manufactured.

The increase in length between the reference marks of the test piece is expressed as a percentage of the length between the reference marks of the unstressed test piece at the breaking point.

If aging is to be performed on prepared test pieces, test pieces belonging to the aging process will be unaged from positions adjacent to the test pieces used for the test, and tensile tests will be performed on aged and unaged test pieces.

A sample of each core to be tested shall be taken, bearing in mind that there is a length of 100 mm, large enough to provide at least five test pieces each for unaged tensile tests and tensile tests after necessary aging treatments. It is necessary for the preparation of each test piece.
