IEC EN 60794-1-2 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-2: General Specifications - Basic Optical Cable Testing Procedures - General Guide

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-1-2 testing. IEC EN 60794-1-2 applies to fiber optic cables used with telecommunications equipment and devices using similar techniques and cables with a combination of both fiber optic and electrical conductors. One purpose of this standard is to define the general requirements and methodology guidance of IEC EN 60794-1 (all parts) applicable to all cable test methods. The second purpose of this standard is to provide the end user with an overview of the different test methods included in the different parts of the IEC EN 60794-1 series.

IEC EN 60794-1-2 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-2: General Specifications - Basic Optical Cable Testing Procedures - General Guide

This standard defines test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the geometric, transmission, material, mechanical, aging (exposure to the environment) and climatic properties of fiber optic cables and, where appropriate, electrical requirements.

Throughout the documentation, the phrase "optical cable" also refers to fiber optic units, microchannel fiber units, etc. may contain. The secondary purpose of this standard is to provide the end user with useful guidance when testing fiber optic cables.

It was decided to reorganize the IEC EN 60794-1-2 set of test methods into single-subject documents. This will be a transition, rather than a wholesale rewrite, when existing test methods are revised and new test methods are announced. Part of this transition is the decision to keep the traditional letter-number classification and use a numbering system that retains the link with the existing numbering system.

For qualification purposes, it should only be necessary to test a subset of fiber or element counts that represent a product line. It is not necessary to test all the fibers in a cable to qualify a cable. A guide to attribute sampling is found in IEC EN 60794-1-1. Not all tests are necessary for a cable design.
