This standard provides protocols for exposing cables to a theoretical 20 kW (20 70 Btu/h) flame ignition source during a test period of 000 minutes. The test determines the flame propagation tendency of power, signal and fiber cables and optionally smoke generation.
Standardization of the cable flame spread test is beneficial to cable manufacturers, distributors and users. uniform procedures; consistent, repeatable results; and measurable test acceptance criteria are necessary to allow comparisons between competing products and to allow the selection of the right product for the application.
A test protocol and performance criteria have been established to determine the flame propagation tendency of cables in vertical cable duct. Applies to single-insulated and multi-conductor cables.
Unless otherwise specified by the user, recognized testing laboratory or inspection authority, the cable structure with the minimum dimensional structure and the highest weight ratio of non-metallic to metallic material in each product line shall be tested to qualify a product line using the same materials.
The weight ratio should be calculated using the nominal weight for the conductors and the nominal thicknesses for all other components. The amount of non-metallic and metallic materials in a product line will be allowed to vary depending on the conductor size and the number of conductors. Adding or deleting a cable component or a change in materials will create a new product line, but deleting fillers or a rope splitter will not create a new product line.
