IEC EN 62040-1 Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) - Standard Test for Safety Requirements

The IEC/EN 62040-1 standard, prepared and published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), applies to electronic uninterruptible power systems (UPS) with an electrical energy storage device in direct current.

The primary function of uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) covered by this standard is to provide continuity of an alternative power source.

This standard applies to UPS for use in mobile, fixed or indoor, low voltage distribution systems and intended for installation in any area accessible to the operator. The requirements to ensure the safety of operators or employees who may come into contact with uninterrupted power systems, in specified situations, are included in this standard.

This standard is designed to ensure the safety of the system installed as a single UPS unit or a system of interconnected UPS units, depending on the installation, operation and maintenance of uninterruptible power systems as specified by the manufacturer.

Uninterruptible power systems deliver a constant alternating current output voltage whose connection voltages do not exceed 1000 volts of alternating current or 1500 volts of direct current and include an energy storage device. Applies to installed and permanently attached UPSs. The purpose of this standard is to reduce fire, electric shock, thermal energy and mechanical hazards during use and, if specifically stated, during service and maintenance.
