2012/19/EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive

Directive 2012/19/EU published by the European Parliament and the Council contains principles on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The said directive describes measures to protect the environment and human health by preventing or reducing the negative effects of waste generation and management from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), reducing the overall effects of resource use and increasing the efficiency of such use on the environment. This directive also contributes to sustainable development in accordance with Directive 2008/98/EC.

2012/19/EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive

This directive must be applied without prejudice to the requirements of the European Union legal regulations regarding safety and health regarding chemicals, in particular the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) directive.

This directive does not apply to any of the following electrical and electronic equipment:

  • Equipment necessary for the protection of the fundamental interests of the security of the member states, including weapons, ammunition and war materials, especially for military purposes
  • Equipment specially designed and installed as part of other equipment outside the scope of this directive, which can only fulfill its function if it is part of this equipment
  • filament bulbs

This directive also does not apply to electrical and electronic equipment:

  • Equipment designed to be sent into space
  • Large-scale stationary industrial tools
  • Large-scale fixed installations excluding any equipment not specifically designed and installed as part of these facilities

For the purposes of directive 2012/19/EU,

  • Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), which depends for proper operation on electric currents or electromagnetic fields and is designed for the generation, transmission and measurement of such currents and fields and for use with a voltage not exceeding 1000 Volts for alternating current and 1500 Volts for direct current. refers to the designed equipment.
  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) means waste electrical and electronic equipment, including all components, sub-assemblies and consumables that are part of the product at the time of disposal, within the scope of directive 2008/98/EC.
