This European standard applies to cast aluminum alloy enclosures used in indoor or outdoor installations of high voltage switchgear and controlgear above 1 kV in which the gas is pressurized with dry air, inert gases, e.g. sulfur hexafluoride or nitrogen or a mixture of such gases.
This standard specifies requirements for the design, construction, testing, inspection and certification of gas-filled enclosures, particularly for use in high-voltage switchgear and controls or associated gas-filled equipment.
It is mainly used for dielectric or arc extinguishing properties at rated voltages above 1 kV and up to (inclusive) 52 kV and in gas-filled compartments with a design pressure higher than 300 kPa relative pressure (gauge).

The purpose of this standard is that the switchgear manufacturer is responsible for achieving and maintaining a consistent and adequate product quality. Adequate inspections must be carried out by the installer to ensure that materials, manufacture and testing comply with the requirements of this standard in all respects.
Inspection by user inspectors does not relieve the manufacturer or installer of their responsibility to implement quality assurance procedures that will ensure that the requirements of this standard are met.
