EN 60811-401 Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables, Non-Metallic Materials, Part 401: Standard Test for Thermal Aging Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 60811-401 standard. This part of the EN 60811 standard specifies the aging procedure in an air furnace that applies to cross-linked and thermoplastic compounds typically used for insulation and coating materials.

EN 60811-401 Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables, Non-Metallic Materials, Part 401: Standard Test for Thermal Aging Methods

The EN 60811 series specifies test methods to be used to test non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and cable materials.

Non-metallic materials are typically used for insulation, sheathing, bedding, stuffing or taping inside cables.

These test methods are considered basic and basic and have been developed and used for many years mainly for materials in all power cables. It has also been widely adopted and used for other cables, especially fiber optic cables, communication and control cables, and cables for ships and offshore applications.

Generally, the mechanical properties are measured after processing, but in some cases the conductor and, if any, separator cannot be removed without damaging the insulation and bending test is performed on the circular conductor up to 16 mm². Aging followed by bending testing is considered the acceptance procedure in case of disagreement.

The aging process is carried out in a furnace with either natural air flow or compressed air flow. Air must enter the furnace to flow from the surface of the test pieces and exit near the top of the furnace. The furnace shall not have less than 8 and more than 20 full air changes per hour at the specified aging temperature.

A rotating fan is allowed inside the furnace when testing rubber compounds, unless otherwise specified in the relevant cable specification. For all other compositions, no fan will be used in the oven, and rubber compositions in dispute will also be tested in an oven designed to operate without a rotating fan inside.
