IEC 60228 Standard Test for Conductors of Insulated Cables

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60228 standard. This standard specifies nominal cross-sectional areas in the range of 0,5 mm2 to 2500 mm2 for conductors in electrical power cables and cords of a wide variety of types.

Requirements for the number and size of wires and resistance values ​​are also included. These conductors include single and stranded copper, aluminum and aluminum alloy conductors and flexible copper conductors in cables for fixed installations.

The standard does not apply to conductors for telecommunication purposes. The applicability of this standard to a particular cable type is as specified in the cable type standard. Unless otherwise specified in a specific clause, this standard deals with conductors in a finished cable, not a conductor made or supplied for inclusion in a cable.

Informative appendices have been added giving additional information covering temperature correction factors for resistance measurement and dimensional limits of circular conductors.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

• Consolidation of material in IEC 60228A;
• Addition of the nominal cross-sectional area definition;
• Adding a note that solid aluminum alloy conductors with the same dimensions as aluminum conductors will have a higher resistance;
• Strengthening the recommendations for the dimensional limits of compressed stranded copper conductors.
