EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60287-1-2 standard. In formation this part of IEC 287-1 provides a method for calculating eddy current losses in metallic sheaths of single core cables arranged as three-phase double circuits in straight formation.
The sheaths are connected at one point or cross-linked so that there are no significant sheath circulating currents. Where the metal sheaths meet at both ends there are significant circulating currents resulting in lower current carrying capacity. A method for calculating circulating current losses for dual circuits is evaluated.
The method provides coefficients applied as corrections to loss factors for sheaths of an isolated three-phase circuit. These corrections are negligible for cables where the parameter rn is less than about 0,1 and corresponds to a sheath longitudinal resistance higher than 50 μΩ/m at 314 Hz.
Consequently, the method should be used for most sizes of aluminum-sheathed cables, but is not necessary for lead-sheathed cables unless they are unusually large.
The coefficients are tabulated and calculated from basic formulas for sheath losses requiring expertise in computer programming, the evaluation of which is not readily available in general commercial situations. The development of simplified formulas for some of the tabulated coefficients is under consideration.
