IEC EN 50289-4-12 Communication Cables - Part 4-12: Environmental Test Methods - Vertical Flame Spread Test on Bundled Small Communication Cables

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 50289-4-12 test. This part 50289-4 of IEC EN 12 describes small communications of less than or equal to 0,5 mm in diameter, assembled in bundles on a test scale so that the total normal volume of non-metallic material is equal to 14 l/m. It's about the cables. Application time is 20 minutes. Recommended tests are for communication cables that require testing of cables for low-density installation. The tests should be specified in the cable specifications, where requirements should also be given.

IEC EN 50289-4-12 Communication Cables - Part 4-12: Environmental Test Methods - Vertical Flame Spread Test on Bundled Small Communication Cables

To calculate the appropriate number of cable sections, the volume per meter of non-metallic material in a cable section must be determined. A cable that should not be less than 0,3 m is carefully cut so that the cut surfaces are perpendicular to the cable axis, so that it is possible to accurately measure its length.

The test flame should be applied for 20 minutes, then it will be extinguished. Air flow through the test chamber should be maintained until the burning or incandescence of the cable ceases, or for a period of up to one hour, after which any remaining combustion or incandescence in the cable is extinguished.

If the original surface is not damaged after wiping, the results are ignored. Melting or deteriorating parts of the non-metallic material are also not taken into account. Flame spread should be measured to two decimal places from the lower end of the burner to the border of the charred zone.

Apply pressure to the surface of the cable using a sharp object such as a knife. The boundary of the charred zone is located at the point where the behavior of the surface becomes brittle (crumbly) rather than elastic.
