The test voltage must be applied between the terminals of the short-circuited primary winding and earth. The chassis, tank (if any), core (if planned to be grounded) and all terminals of the secondary winding or windings must be grounded.
Shock tests usually consist of repeatedly applying voltage to the reference voltage level, then to the nominal level. The reference impulse voltage should be between 50% and 75% of the rated impulse withstand voltage. The peak value and shock waveform should be recorded.
The secondary excitation characteristic of the transformer, secondary winding resistance, secondary load resistance and turn ratio, which are required for current transformers used with electrical protective relays, are sufficient to evaluate its performance according to the protective relay system it will be used with.
