It sets criteria for evaluating the thermal endurance of electrical insulating materials (EIM) or electrical insulating systems (EIS). It also determines the procedure for assigning thermal classes. This standard applies where the thermal factor is the dominant aging factor. Significant technical changes compared to the previous edition relate to the fact that this edition is a blend of the third edition of this standard together with IEC 62114.
The designation of an electrotechnical device as belonging to a certain thermal class does not mean that each EIM used in its construction has the same thermal endurance and should not be perceived as such.
The thermal class for an EIS may not be directly related to the thermal endurance of the individual EIM contained within it. In EIS, the shielding character of the other EIM used in the system can improve the performance of a separate EIM, allowing it to be used in an EIS with a thermal class higher than the thermal endurance of a single EIM.
On the other hand, incompatibility issues between EIM can reduce the appropriate thermal class of the system below the thermal endurance of the EIM. Therefore, the thermal capabilities of an EIM cannot be inferred from the thermal class of an EIS of which it is a component.
Besides thermal factors, the ability of the EIS to function is affected by many factors such as electrical and mechanical stresses, vibration, harmful atmospheres and chemicals, humidity, dirt and radiation. All these factors must be taken into account when designing certain electrotechnical devices, and further guidance on the evaluation of these aspects can be found in IEC EN 60505.
