The purpose of this test is to define a standardized test method for assessing the ability of connectors to function in a particular way in a particular environment that may be encountered during normal use, including storage. This standard provides a standardized composite testing method for determining the conformity of connectors when exposed to environmental conditions consisting of a range of temperature, humidity and, where necessary, low air pressure environmental stresses.
The order of application of the stresses and the transition conditions from one step to the next have been chosen to accelerate, amplify, and allow potential interactions of the same types of degradation mechanisms as observed under natural climatic conditions.
In this composite test, connector samples are subjected to environmental tests in a standard order and categorized according to their climatic categories assigned by the detail (product) specification, except that the third set of numbers is used as an indication of the number of cycles.
Where any change is required, the relevant binding detail (product) specification provides the necessary information for each step in the method. This test is often specified to follow up with other tests that involve mechanical stress, such as strength of terminations, solderability, shock and vibration tests, for example as a way to determine if the tightness of the specimen has been damaged.
The specimen fitted with any accessories normally supplied with the connector should be properly assembled and wired to the detail (product) specification. When the detail (product) specification requires, the sample should be run the specified number of times prior to testing.
For each of the individual tests performed in this composite test, the detail (product) specification should specify the condition of the sample, such as run or unrun, paired or unpaired.
