Askarels have many outstanding properties that explain their use in electrical transformers. Significant differences that may arise from these characteristics compared to the usual behavior of mineral oil should be accurately recognized by both transformer manufacturers and users.
Askarel is a relatively polar material; that is, their molecules are dipoles, rotating freely around their axes and responding to the direction of electrical forces. Askarel therefore exhibits a much higher permeability than mineral oil and is therefore much more sensitive to polar contaminants. This sensitivity is reflected in the dissipation factor and resistivity, which are affected by even traces of pollutants that normally do not adversely affect the electrical power.
As with other dielectric fluids, askarel will absorb moisture when exposed to a humid atmosphere. Water solubility increases with temperature and is approximately twice that of transformer mineral oil when expressed on a weight concentration basis under equal exposure conditions.
