IEC EN 60609-2 Evaluation of Cavitation Pitting in Hydraulic Turbines - Storage Pumps and Pump Turbines - Part 2: Evaluation in Pelton Turbines

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60609-2 testing. IEC EN 60609-2 serves as the basis for the formulation of guarantees for cavitation pitting in Pelton turbine skids. Also, in the contract, the power, specific hydraulic energy of the machine (head), rotation speed, material, work, etc. Guarantees that limit the extent of cavitation pitting and droplet erosion in Pelton turbines at the end of a contractual period of operation are required when pitting is expected in all or some of their operating ranges.

IEC EN 60609-2 Evaluation of Cavitation Pitting in Hydraulic Turbines - Storage Pumps and Pump Turbines - Part 2: Evaluation in Pelton Turbines

Guarantees limiting the extent of cavitation and jet impingement erosion in Pelton turbines at the end of a contractual operating period shall be established whenever there is a possibility of damage to all or part of the envisaged operations. Such warranties will include limitations of use consistent with the specified operating conditions of the machine.

However, the cavitation guarantee will be given on the basis of an agreed water analysis. If during further analysis it becomes clear that the water is in fact more aggressive than indicated in the agreed analysis, this will be taken into account when deciding whether the guarantees given are met.

In the event of a disturbed flow condition at the turbine inlet due to irregularities upstream of the turbine, the hydraulic effects may increase beyond the effect on hydraulic performance, which can cause cavitation pitting. Therefore, cavitation cavities are claimed to guarantee that a satisfactorily uniform and eddy-free flow condition will be maintained. In the event of damage, the effect of the unsuitable flow situation shall be taken into account.

Unless otherwise agreed, the cavitation guarantee period or cavitation guarantee run time will be the same as agreed in the contract for the Pelton turbine as a whole.

In order to establish the cavitation pitting guarantee and determine whether the guarantee is met, it is necessary to specify exactly the allowable machine operating range in terms of specific hydraulic energy and power, together with the corresponding reference operating time.

Specific hydraulic energy, power and working hours will be recorded during the warranty period. The turbine contractor will be given the opportunity to verify whether the agreed conditions have been complied with.
