IEC EN 60794-5-10 is a family specification covering outdoor micro-channel optical fiber cables for blown installation and associated micro-ducts, which together form a micro-channel optical fiber cable system. Although primarily designed for use with outdoor micro-duct applications, the cable products described here may be used individually for short lengths in other applications as agreed between supplier and customer.
These can include short distances inside a building or in other outdoor applications, such as the transition between separate (non-connected) micro-duct systems, or the transition from a micro-duct system to another shielding structure such as a cable tray or tray. Systems built with components covered by this standard are subject to the requirements of IEC EN 60794-5 where applicable.
The parameters specified in this standard may be affected by measurement errors due to the lack of suitable standards or measurement uncertainty due to calibration errors. Acceptance criteria should be interpreted according to this assessment. The number of fibers and microchannels tested will represent the microchannel optical fiber cable design and will be agreed between the customer and the supplier.
Products covered by this specification must be designed and manufactured for an expected working life of at least 20 years. Micro-channel optical fiber cables are designed to be installed in micro-channels or shielded micro-channels and suitable enclosures. Micro-channels and shielded micro-channels suitable for use with micro-channel optical fiber cables are defined in this standard. Microduct optical fiber cables are optimized for installation and operational life in these microducts.
Micro-channel optical fiber cables are suitable for installation by blowing into a micro-channel. Although not specifically addressed in cable product specifications such as IEC EN 60794-2, IEC EN 60794-3 or IEC EN 60794-4, cable products specifically designed for blow-through installation in micro-channels may also conform to other such industry standards and specifications. However, they are often not as mechanically robust as traditional outdoor fiber optic cables and therefore require the use of proper installation and handling practices to prevent damage. Instant setup practices can degrade optical performance or reduce the operating life of products.
