IEC EN 60825-3 Safety of Laser Products - Part 3: Guidelines for Laser Demonstrations

This standard is a code of practice for the design, installation, operation and safety evaluation of laser light shows and displays and the equipment used in their production. This standard is also intended for individuals replacing laser display installations or equipment.

The laser power required to produce visually impactful theatrical or artistic performances in large areas such as theatres, arenas or architectural spaces is large enough to pose a serious accidental exposure hazard even if personal exposure is of very short duration. Therefore, IEC EN 60825-14 specifies that only Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3R visible beam laser products should be used for demonstration, display or entertainment in uncontrolled areas. Only under carefully controlled conditions and under the control of a trained, experienced operator, higher class laser products may be used for visual entertainment.

This standard includes safety criteria for the protection of the public or persons in the vicinity of laser screens during their operation.

This standard is intended for use by:

  • To design, manufacture, assemble, install or operate laser products of Class 4, Class 3B or invisible beam Class 3R for display and entertainment purposes;
  • Operate arenas, theatres, music festivals, TV studios, planetariums, discotheques or other venues where such laser products are installed and operated; or
  • Responsible for reviewing the safety of such equipment, installations or displays.

This standard is a code of practice for the design, installation, operation and safety evaluation of laser light shows and displays and the equipment used in their production. This standard is also intended for individuals replacing laser display installations or equipment.
