Chopper-fed direct current (DC) traction motors and their control is a system used in railway applications to control the speed and direction of locomotives and other rolling stock.
The system consists of a chopper circuit that regulates the current flowing into the motor and therefore controls motor speed and torque. The chopper circuit works by rapidly switching the motor power on and off, allowing the motor to draw only the amount of current needed to maintain the desired speed and torque.
The chopper circuit is controlled by a microprocessor-based control system that monitors the speed and other parameters of the motor and adjusts the chopper output accordingly.
The control system also includes safety features such as overcurrent and overvoltage protection, as well as feedback mechanisms that ensure the motor runs within safe temperature ranges and does not exceed maximum speed or torque limits.
