This International standard describes a test method that can provide a preliminary distinction between similar insulating materials in their resistance to damage when exposed to high-voltage, low-current arc discharges occurring near their surface.
The discharges cause localized thermal and chemical weathering and erosion, eventually forming a conductive path through the insulating material. The severity of the test conditions gradually increases: in the early stages a low-current arc discharge is repeatedly interrupted, while in the later stages the arc current is increased in successive steps.
Because of its simplicity and short time required for testing, the test method can be applied for preliminary screening of materials, detecting the effects of changes in formulation, and quality control testing.
Previous experience with this test has shown acceptable repeatability with thermoset materials. Some testing labs using thermoplastics report unacceptably large variations in test results leading to the recommendation not to use the test for thermoplastics.
In general, this test method will not allow conclusions to be drawn regarding the relative arc resistance rankings of materials that may be exposed to other types of arcing.
