A wide dynamic and frequency range can be applied to test even super-shielded cables with normal instrumentation, from low frequencies to the limit of defined transverse waves in the external circuit at about 4 GHz. For balanced cables, the upper frequency is limited by the properties of the baluns.

The paired wire under test fed by a generator forms the circuit that disrupts the internal or primary circuit respectively. The affected outer or second circuit, respectively, is formed by the outer conductor of the cable under test (or the outermost layer in multi-screen cables) and a solid metal tube with the tested cable on its axis.

Voltage peaks at the far end of the secondary circuit should be measured. The near end of the secondary circuit is shorted. A compatible receiver is not required for this measurement. Possible voltage peaks at the far end do not depend on the input impedance of the receiver, provided it is lower than the characteristic impedance of the secondary circuit. However, having a low mismatch is an advantage, for example by choosing a range of pipe diameters for coaxial cables of various sizes.

The results of the minimum coupling attenuation must conform to the value specified in the relevant cable specification. If a radiant power limit value is specified for a cable system operated with a certain power level, the difference between the power level and the radiant power limit must not be greater than the coupling attenuation of the cable supplied for the system.
