This standard specifies a general test method for determining the electrical resistance (specific electrical resistance) or specific electrical conductivity, respectively, of an aqueous extract of a pigment. The method is applicable to all pigments and fillers except water-soluble pigments.
The resistivity of the aqueous extract of a pigment is considered a property independent of the amount of water-soluble substance. If accepted, the cold extraction method can be used.
The standard setting temperature should preferably be, but a different temperature can be agreed upon between the parties, provided the necessary adjustments are made to take account of temperature differences.
Where this general method is applicable to a particular pigment, a cross-reference will simply be included in the International Standard for that pigment, together with any detailed notes for amendments that may be necessary taking into account the particular properties of the pigment. Only when this general method cannot be applied to a particular pigment will a specific method be specified for determining the resistivity of the aqueous extract.
In general, the cell constant is largely unaffected by changes in the potency of the potassium chloride solution, but for the highest accuracy, a concentration of potassium chloride solution with a resistance similar to that of the solution under test should be used, and measurements will be made at values using the middle third of the scale.
