This draft European standard details test methods for determining the attenuation of finished cables used in analog and digital communication systems. It must be read together with IEC EN 50289-1-1, which contains the basic provisions for its application.
Short circuit, open circuit, reference load and short jumper cable or similar are required to perform full 2-port calibration. A short circuit will have negligible inductance and an open circuit will have negligible capacitance. The load resistance will have a value close (within 100%) to the nominal impedance of the CUT (for example 1 Ω) and with negligible inductance and capacitance. The connecting cable should be as short as possible and match the rated impedance.
The CUT shall have the minimum length specified in the relevant section specification. Both ends of the CUT should be prepared in such a way that the effect on the test result when connected to the terminals of the test equipment is minimized. Twisting of pairs/quads must be maintained.
It is the purpose of the standard to detail the calibration procedure, not to detail the algorithms applied by a VNA to correct the measured results based on a calibration procedure. More information can be obtained from the VNA supplier's manuals.
Calibration should be done on the secondary side of the baluns. A full two port calibration is recommended using a short jumper wire between the two baluns for open, short circuit and load calibration artifacts at the balun terminals and for full calibration.
