The primary purpose of IEC 60417 graphic symbols is to identify equipment or a part of equipment (e.g. a control or display), indicate a functional state (e.g. open, closed, alarm), identify connections (e.g. terminals, filling points for materials), about packaging to provide information (eg description of contents, instructions for use), instructions for operating the equipment (eg usage limitations).
