IEC EN 60794-4-20 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 4-20: Cross-sectional Specification - Aerial Optical Cables Along Electrical Power Lines - Family Specification for ADSS Optical Cables

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-4-20 test. IEC EN 60794-4-20 covers optical telecommunications cables with single-mode fibers generally used in overhead power line applications. Cables can also be used on other public service networks, such as telephone or TV services. The requirements of the IEC 60794-4 section specification for overhead optical cables running along electrical power lines are applicable to cables covered by this document.

IEC EN 60794-4-20 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 4-20: Cross-sectional Specification - Aerial Optical Cables Along Electrical Power Lines - Family Specification for ADSS Optical Cables

This standard covers construction, mechanical, electrical and optical performance, installation guidelines, acceptance criteria, testing requirements, environmental considerations, and accessory compatibility for an all-dielectric, self-supporting fiber optic (ADSS) cable. ADSS cable consists of single-mode optical fibers in one or more shielding dielectric fiber optic units surrounded or connected to suitable dielectric strength members and sheaths. The cable does not contain metallic components.

Single-mode optical fibers meeting the requirements of IEC EN 60793-2-50 shall be used. Only the main features are mentioned in this article. Fibers other than those mentioned above may also be used if mutually agreed between the customer and the supplier. In this case, fiber properties and attenuation criteria for mechanical tests will be specified in the detail specification.

Dielectric cables laid in power lines are exposed to electric fields. The magnitude of this field field potential exposure depends on the line voltage, tower design, conductor configuration, and installation location for ADSS. In combination with special environmental conditions, especially desert or heavily polluted areas near the sea, this can lead to electrical breakdown (eg dry tape arc) which can cause serious damage to the outer cable sheath and ultimately lead to complete cable failure. Susceptibility to electrical disturbance is dependent on a combination of field potential used, cable, medium and sheath material. In areas with higher field potential or poor environmental conditions, non-marking sheath materials may be required to reduce product life risk.

The parameters specified in this standard may be affected by measurement errors due to lack of suitable standards or measurement uncertainty due to calibration errors. Acceptance criteria should be interpreted according to this assessment. For some parameters specified in this standard, the aim is to have no change in attenuation.
