This part of IEC EN 61158 provides the common elements for essential time-critical messaging communications between devices in an automation environment. In this context, the term "time-critical" means priority full-duplex collision-free time-determining communication in which one or more specified actions must be completed with a certain level of precision. Failure to complete specified actions within the required time limit risks failure of applications that demand the actions, along with risk to equipment, facilities, and possibly human life.

The main purpose of this standard is to identify the characteristics of conceptual DLL services suitable for time-critical communications and to support the OSI Basic Reference Model in guiding the development of data link protocols for time-critical communications. A secondary purpose is to provide migration paths from pre-existing industrial communication protocols.

This standard does not specify individual applications or products and does not restrict the applications of data link entities within industrial automation systems.

The equipment does not comply with this data link layer service definition standard. Instead, compliance is achieved through the implementation of the relevant data link protocol that meets the Type 21 DLL services defined in this standard.

In diagrams showing DLS and DLM interfaces, dashed lines show cause and effect or time series relationships between actions at different stations, while solid lines with arrows show cause and effect time series relationships that occur within the DLE provider at a single station.
