SAE J1576 Graphite Foam Thermal Management Materials for Electronics Packaging

The purpose of this standard is to use the recently developed high conductivity carbon foam for thermal management in electronics (heat exchangers and coolers).

The technique used to produce the foam produces medium-phase pitch-based graphite foam with extremely high thermal conductivity and open-cell structure.

The thermal properties of the foam were increased by 0,56% from 3 to 79 W/m·K at a density of 106 g/cm187 through process optimization. It has been shown that if graphite foam with high thermal conductivity is used as the core material for the heat exchanger, the effective heat transfer can be increased by at least an order of magnitude compared to conventional designs. A single pass foam core/aluminum clad heat exchanger was fabricated for testing the electronic modules of power inverters.
