The EN 60811 series specifies test methods to be used to test non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and cable materials.

All tests should be performed at least 16 hours after extrusion or, if applicable, cross-linking of the isolation or coating compounds.

Only one core needs to be tested, whether the cable is single or multi-core. A sufficient length of core shall be cut from a position not less than 1,5 m from the end of the cable length to provide two test pieces. If there is no extruded semiconductor layer on the outside of the core, then sufficient length shall be taken for four test pieces.

If the core does not have an extruded semiconductor screen, a test piece shall be bent in the direction and plane of its current curvature without bending for a full turn around a mandrel and tied with twine or tape at the intersection of the ends. and a second test piece of the same core should be bent similarly but in the opposite direction in the current plane of curvature.
