High Voltage Switching and Control Scheme Test

Operational high voltage switching is the operation of a fully enclosed circuit breaker with an integrated grounding system using a safe operating procedure documented specifically for that breaker and approved by the high voltage group and the facility owner. Operational switching also applies to fully enclosed reclosers in high voltage antennas. However, it does not cover:

High Voltage Switching and Control Scheme Test

  • Proving that high voltage networks and devices outside the approved safe operating procedure are dead
  • Grounding high voltage network and apparatus outside of approved safe operating procedure
  • Granting and revocation of high voltage access permits
  • Any passage outside of the approved safe operating procedure

High voltage normally means voltage exceeding 1.000 volts alternating current or 1.500 volts direct current. High voltage access permit refers to a form of declaration to be used when an isolation permit is not used for work on or near exposed high voltage conductors.

Switching or switching operations refers to the operation of fuses, linkages, circuit breakers, isolators, and other methods of establishing or breaking an electrical circuit. It also includes proving and testing the deadness of high voltage network and apparatus, applying and removing grounding as well as placing voltage transformers in and out, but this does not apply in the case of operational switching.

High voltage is defined as levels between 1000 volts and 100 thousand volts for alternating current (AC) systems and between 1500 volts and 100 thousand volts for direct current (DC) systems, according to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). However, in some safety regulations this term may also refer to voltages as low as 50 volts. For example, the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines high voltage in its safety procedures as 600 volts or higher.

High voltage systems are vital in electrical energy transmission and distribution, allowing electricity to be transported over long distances with minimal energy loss. Power lines, transmission lines, and transformers all play a role in the energy transmission and distribution process. Transformers are used to raise or lower voltage levels depending on whether electricity is transported long distances or distributed to end users.

High voltage circuits and equipment such as transformers and switchgear are designed to handle higher voltages safely and efficiently. These devices are essential components of power distribution networks and are subject to stringent design, manufacturing and testing standards to ensure reliability and safety.

High voltage systems are widely used in electrical energy transmission and distribution networks, substations and industrial facilities. High voltage allows efficient power transfer over long distances while reducing energy loss due to resistance.

Circuit breaker is a circuit breaker capable of generating, carrying, and breaking currents under normal circuit conditions, as well as being capable of generating, carrying, and breaking currents for a specified period of time, as well as breaking currents under certain abnormal conditions, such as a short circuit, according to IEEE C37.100 IEEE standard on definitions of high voltage circuit breakers. It is a mechanical switching device.

Circuit breakers are generally classified according to the interrupting medium used to cool and extend the electric arc allowing the interruption.

High voltage switching is a critical process involving the control and isolation of high levels of electrical energy in power systems. It is an important component of energy production, transmission and distribution systems. Effective high voltage switching techniques are crucial to maintaining the reliability and safety of power systems. Mastering high voltage switching is crucial to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical networks.
