IEC EN 60721-4-6 Classification of Environmental Conditions - Part 4-6: Guidance for Correlation and Conversion of IEC EN 60721-3 Environmental Condition Classes with IEC EN 60068 Ship Environment Environmental Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60721-4-6 testing. IEC EN 60721-4-6 deals with the correlation and conversion of conditions given in IEC EN 60721-3-6 with environmental tests defined in IEC EN 60068-2. An environment can be composed of a number of environmental conditions such as dynamic, climatic and biological and other effects resulting from chemically and mechanically active substances. Only dynamic and climatic conditions are considered in this report. The purpose of this whitepaper is to provide guidance to the specification author with a set of easy-to-use tables that relate and transform these conditions.

IEC EN 60721-4-6 Classification of Environmental Conditions - Part 4-6: Guidance for Correlation and Conversion of IEC EN 60721-3 Environmental Condition Classes with IEC EN 60068 Ship Environment Environmental Tests

It is important to highlight the indicative nature of this report, as it is almost impossible to specify mandatory requirements for worldwide use. However, where tests different from those recommended in this report are required, the guidance provided should establish principles and methodology for identifying alternative tests.

Conversion guidance is provided where the parameters used to define conditions in IEC EN 60721-3-6 differ from those used to define tests or severity ratings in IEC EN 60068-2.

Correlation reasons are provided to enable specification authors to modify a test if their implementation warrants it. When there are differences in parameter values between IEC EN 60721-3-6 and IEC EN 60068-2, the closest severity ratings of the IEC EN 60068-2 test procedures are used. If it is necessary to deviate from an IEC EN 60068-2 severity, the reasons are detailed in the report and an alternative test is recommended in the tables.

IEC EN 60721-3-6 specifies the classes of environmental parameter groups together with the relevant environmental conditions to which products may be exposed during transport. Parameters in these classes are given separately, but products may be exposed to them simultaneously. Some of the parameters are independent while others may be strongly related, such as solar radiation and temperature.

Ship environment classes refer to the environmental conditions a product is exposed to under conditions of use when installed on ships. Environmental conditions created by products in the same place in an enclosure are not included in these classes. The relevant specification should specify when the product is operational during the environmental testing program and what performance requirements and failure criteria should be measured before, during and after testing.
