This standard covers low voltage battery cable intended for use in surface vehicle electrical systems at a rated system voltage of 60 V DC (25 V AC) or less.
The tests are intended to qualify cables for normal applications with limited exposure to liquids and physical abuse.

This test is valid only for cross-linkable and thermoset materials. The insulation should be homogeneous and placed concentrically within commercial tolerances about the conductor. The insulation should adhere tightly to the conductors but peel off easily leaving the conductors in suitable condition for termination. Separators are optional.
When a test is required, all combinations of conductor size, wall thickness and insulation formulation must meet the appropriate requirements. However, if testing of a representative conductor size is permitted, suitability for a family of cables can be demonstrated by testing only large and small conductor sizes. Permission to demonstrate conformity for a family of cables by testing representative conductor sizes will be determined by agreement between the customer and supplier.
