The SAE standard defines methods and apparatus for evaluating electronic devices for immunity to potential interference from battery supply or transients conducted across key ignition inputs. The test apparatus specifications outlined in this procedure have been developed for components installed on vehicles with 12-V systems (passenger cars and light trucks, 12-V heavy-duty trucks, and vehicles with 24-V systems). Currently, it is not intended for use on other input/output lines of the device under test(DUT).

SAE J1113 Test Procedure

Installed electrical equipment is powered by sources that, in addition to the desired electrical voltage, contain transients many times this value, which are caused by the release of stored energy during operation of a relay and/or other loads connected to the source when starting and/or shutting down the vehicle. These tests are designed to determine the ability of equipment to withstand such transients. The tests are done in the laboratory. Bench test methods yield results that also allow for comparison between laboratories. These tests may not cover all transients that can occur on a vehicle. However, the test pulses described in chapter 8 are characteristic of typical pulses. In addition to bench testing, vehicle testing must be performed to ensure a vehicle can function properly in an electromagnetic environment.
