UL 1973 Standard for Safety Batteries Used in Fixed, Electric Rail Applications

This standard applies to PV, wind turbine storage or UPS, etc. It covers the battery systems defined by this standard for use as energy storage for stationary applications such as These systems must be installed in accordance with NFPA 70, C22.1 or other applicable setup codes.

UL 1973 Standard for Safety Batteries Used in Fixed, Electric Rail Applications

These requirements also cover battery systems defined by this standard for use in light electric rail (LER) applications and fixed rail applications such as rail substations. These systems are designed for installation either in a car or in a sheltered fixed location such as a railway substation. These battery systems can use regenerative braking from trains as an energy source for recharging and are designed for direct or indirect connection to railway power lines. These battery systems are designed as an emergency power source to balance loads during rush hour, serve as an energy storage device during the regenerative break of trains, and transport trains to the nearest station during power outages.

Annex B to this standard contains specific requirements for sodium-beta type technologies. Annex C of this standard contains specific requirements for fluid electrolyte technologies.

This standard evaluates the ability of the battery system to safely withstand simulated abuse conditions. This standard evaluates the system according to the charge and discharge parameters specified by the manufacturer.

This standard does not evaluate the performance (ie capacity measurements under various discharge conditions) or reliability (ie capacity measurements under various environmental conditions) of these devices.
