The most common cause of electrostatic charge is contact electrification. Conductive objects can become inductively charged if they are in an electric field produced by other charged objects or nearby high-potential conductors. Any object can become charged if charged particles or ionized molecules accumulate on it.

Contact electrification can occur at solid/solid, liquid/liquid, or solid/liquid interfaces. Clean gases cannot be charged this way. If a gas contains solid particles or if the liquid droplet remains in suspension, they can be charged by contact, so that such a gas can carry an electrostatic charge through these particles.
