EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of DEF STAN-59-113 standard. The purpose of this standard is to define the design, evaluation and testing requirements to be used to ensure safety and security, with risk assessment procedures.
This standard specifies the minimum requirements for design to protect aircraft and crew from the effects of lightning strikes. Applies to all fixed and rotary wing aircraft received against Def Stan 00-970.
The standard covers both a direct impact where the lightning channel connects to the aircraft, and a nearby flash where the aircraft itself or the crew is close enough to be affected by electromagnetic waves, even though there is no contact.
Far-field effects are the effects of exposure to the radiated electromagnetic field of a distant lightning bolt. Effects are not addressed in this Def Stan, as protection is automatically provided by hardening indirect effects.
Direct effects result from the passage of direct lightning current and are therefore only found in direct strikes. Possible hazards include perforation of the fuselage, including those of fuel tanks, and fire or explosion due to sparks or hot spots.
Indirect effects result from the coupling of the lightning current flowing in the aircraft or the lightning flash itself with its electromagnetic fields. Therefore, these effects can occur as a result of either a direct impact or a nearby flash. Possible hazards include malfunction or permanent damage to electronic equipment due to induced transient voltages or currents.
