For practical considerations, this standard distinguishes between harmonics, interharmonics and other components above the harmonic frequency range up to 9 kHz.

It defines measuring instruments for testing individual elements of equipment in accordance with the emission limits given in certain standards (for example, harmonic current limits).

Care must be taken that the high value of the base (supply frequency) voltage compared to other voltage components to be measured does not generate an overload that causes damage or intermodulation signals in the input stages of the device. Errors that occur in this way will be less than the specified accuracy. An overload indicator will be provided.

The designation of a DFT instrument as a reference instrument in this standard does not preclude the application of other analysis principles such as (digital) filter banks or even other analysis principles such as wavelet analysis.

Also, a shorter timeframe, possibly only one period long, is conceivable, especially for low-cost instruments. However, such instrumentation should not be used to evaluate non-stationary signals compliance with emission limits, as such signals cannot be evaluated in this way.
