EN 50081-1 Electromagnetic Compatibility - General Emissions Standard - Part 1: Residential, Commercial and Light Industry

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 50081-1 standard. This part of the EN 50081 standard applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in residential, commercial and light industrial environments and for which there is no specific product or product family emission standard. Devices designed to emit electromagnetic energy for radio communication purposes are excluded from this standard. Distortions in the 0 Hz to 400 GHz frequency range are covered.

EN 50081-1 Electromagnetic Compatibility - General Emissions Standard - Part 1: Residential, Commercial and Light Industry

Where a relevant specific product or product family EMC emission standard exists, this standard will take precedence over all aspects of this general standard. Emission requirements do not exceed a level where disturbances produced by appliances operating normally in residential, commercial and light industrial locations may prevent other appliances from working as intended. Fault states of the device are not taken into account.

Apparatus installed in locations covered by this standard are considered to be directly connected to a low-voltage general mains supply or to a specific DC source intended to interface between the apparatus and a low-voltage general mains supply. Apparatus intended to be connected to an industrial power grid or special power supply sources are covered by another general standard.

The purpose of this standard is to deal with electromagnetic emissions that may cause interference with other devices, e.g. radio receivers. These emission limits represent basic electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Test requirements are determined for each port evaluated.

However, the limits in this standard may not provide complete protection against interference to radio and television reception when the device is used closer than 10 m from the receiving antenna.

In special cases, for example where very sensitive equipment is used in close proximity, additional mitigation measures may need to be applied to further reduce electromagnetic emission below specified levels.

The environments covered by this standard are residential, commercial and light industrial locations, both indoors and outdoors. The following list, though not understood, is an indication of the locations included:

  • Residential properties, eg. houses, apartments, etc.;
  • Retail outlets, eg. shops, supermarkets, etc.;
  • Businesses, eg. offices, banks, etc.;
  • Public entertainment areas, eg. cinemas, public bars, dance halls, etc.;
  • Outdoors, eg. gas stations, parking lots, entertainment and sports centers, etc.;
  • Light industrial locations, eg. workshops, laboratories, service centers, etc.

Places characterized by low voltage supply directly from the public mains are considered residential, commercial or light industrial.
