EN 50177 Fixed Electrostatic Application Equipment for Flammable Coating Powders - Safety Rules

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50177 testing. This European standard specifies requirements for stationary electrostatic application equipment for flammable coating powders to be used in explosive atmospheres produced by its own spray clouds. A distinction is made between spray systems corresponding to EN 50050 and spray systems designed for higher discharge energies or currents.

The charge of the combustible coating powder can be achieved by applying high voltage or triboelectrically. This European standard also specifies design-related requirements for the safe operation of fixed equipment, including electrical wiring.

This European standard addresses all the hazards that are important for electrostatic spraying of coating materials, which may also contain small amounts of additional metal particles if performed under the conditions recommended by the manufacturer. This includes in particular the ignition hazards arising from the explosive atmosphere produced and the protection of persons from electric shock.

Particular attention should be paid to avoiding electrostatic charges on different surfaces located near the dust cloud. This includes workpieces or reciprocating devices during the coating process, and mounting parts of the powder spray system, etc. may apply to

During the electrostatic coating process, the coating powder is carried in an air stream from a powder hopper to an electrostatic spraying device. As the powder particles flow through the spray device, they are electrostatically charged by a high voltage of the order of tens of kilovolts and are sprayed in the form of a cloud directed towards the workpiece. Charged particles of the cloud are attracted and applied to the grounded workpiece.
