EN 50529-2 EMC Network Standard - Part 2: Test Standard for Wired Telecommunications Networks Using Coaxial Cables

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50529-2 testing. This EMC standard specifies requirements, including in-house extensions, for emissions from and immunity of wired telecommunications networks using coaxial cables, with reference to compliant EMC product standards and other standards that have EMC requirements together with good engineering practices.

EN 50529-2 EMC Network Standard - Part 2: Test Standard for Wired Telecommunications Networks Using Coaxial Cables

This standard covers the frequency range from 9 kHz to 400 GHz. Evaluation of a network should only be performed in the frequency ranges where the limits are defined. The emission limits set in this standard do not apply to emissions required from embedded radio links within the network. The requirements do not exceed a level at which electromagnetic disturbances produced by a network or parts of it, normal operation, radio and telecommunications equipment or other devices cannot function as intended. Network fault conditions are not taken into account.

This part of the multipart EMC standard specifies limits and measurement methods for emissions from and immunity of wired telecommunications networks through references to harmonized product standards with good engineering practice. This standard specifically refers to networks using coaxial cables.

Good EMC engineering practice for a telecommunications network using coaxial cables means:

  • Only the connector that has been found to comply with the relevant EMC standards, using an appropriate representation of the type of cable to which the apparatus must be connected;
  • The device must be grounded and connected according to the manufacturer's installation instructions;
  • To minimize the coupling of electromagnetic disturbances from the electrical grid to the telecommunications grid, mains cable paths should be separated as far as possible from the AC power grid wiring;
  • When connecting the device to the network for the first time, steps should be taken to ensure that the network cable is tested and free of errors;
  • An operational plan should be made with a detailed procedure for monitoring and minimizing failures;
  • Installation of passive and active equipment should only be done by trained personnel using the appropriate tools for cable and connector installation;
  • Measurement of signal levels and quality (C/N ratio, C/I ratio etc.) should only be done by trained personnel using appropriate and calibrated measuring instruments;
  • All unused apparatus ports must be terminated with shielded terminations of appropriate value (eg 75 Ω);
  • Measurement of the upstream input (eg by the cable modem termination system) can be a good indicator of the shielding effectiveness of the coaxial cable network;
  • During the installation of any new network infrastructure (eg new cableways), care should be taken to place it as far as possible from existing fixed radio receiving antennas.
