EN IEC 61000-6-4 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 6-4 General Standards - Emissions Standard for Industrial Environments

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN IEC 61000-6-4 standard. For EMC emission requirements, this part of IEC 61000 applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in industrial environments as described. This general EMC emission standard applies if the relevant specific product or product family EMC emission standard is not available.

EN IEC 61000-6-4 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 6-4 General Standards - Emissions Standard for Industrial Environments

This general EMC emission standard applies if the relevant specific product or product family EMC emission standard is not available. This standard applies to an apparatus intended to be connected to a power grid fed from a high or medium voltage transformer dedicated to the supply of a utility supply manufacturing or similar facility and intended to operate in or near industrial locations as described.

This standard also applies to battery powered devices intended for industrial use. There is no need to measure at frequencies for which no requirements are specified.

The environments covered by this standard are industrial, both indoors and outdoors. Industrial locations are also characterized by the presence of one or more of the following examples:

  • Industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) apparatus,
  • Heavy inductive or capacitive loads that are frequently switched,
  • High currents and associated magnetic fields.

IEC/EN 61000-6-4 defines emission test requirements for scope-defined apparatus regarding continuous and transient, conducted and radiated disturbances. The emissions requirements have been chosen to ensure that the disturbances produced by apparatus normally operating in industrial locations do not exceed a level that could prevent other apparatus from operating as intended.

Fault states of the device are not taken into account. This standard does not include all deterioration events for testing purposes, but only those considered relevant to the equipment covered by this standard. These requirements represent basic electromagnetic compatibility emission requirements. Requirements are set for each port considered.

Requirements include both conducted and radiated emissions. The transmitted emission requirements for the network ports and telecommunications ports must be met in the frequency range 0kHz - 30MHz.

The radiated emission requirements must be met in the frequency range:

  • 108MHz-30GHz if internal oscillator frequency is up to 1MHz
  • 500MHz-30GHz if internal oscillator frequency is up to 2MHz
  • 1 MHz-30 GHz if internal oscillator frequency is up to 5 GHz
  • 1MHz-30GHz if internal oscillator frequency is higher than 6GHz

If the internal oscillator frequency is unknown, measurements will be made up to 6GHz. Measurements will be made up to 9MHz if the internal oscillator frequency or operating frequency is up to 230kHz. Immunity requirements are not covered by this standard and will be included in IEC/EN 61000-6-1.

Safety aspects are also not covered by this standard. Equipment used in commercial, residential or light industrial applications may fall under the requirements of the EU Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU or the EU Machinery Directive, 2006/42/EEC.
